Become Part of the Team as a Health Peer Mentor

If you would like to make a difference by supporting people to improve their health through lifestyle change, then the role of Community Health Peer Mentor may well be for you.

You only need to read the newspapers or watch the television to be aware that the country is facing a health crisis.  Obesity, diabetes, alcohol misuse, smoking etc. are wrecking lives and creating a ticking timebomb for the NHS.  In most cases, AdobeStock 356674146however, these problems can be solved by lifestyle changes such as eating and drinking sensibly, exercising and giving up cigarettes.

Sounds easy - but it isn't.  We all need more than just desire to make changes; we need information and support.

That is where Health Peer Mentors come in.

The Feelgood Factory trains ordinary community members so that they have the skills necessary to provide one-to-one support to people wanting to improve their health.

The Health Peer Mentor role includes tasks such as:

  • Acting as a listening ear and offering support and guidance when needed,
  • Helping an individual to draw up a personal action plan and review the plan regularly,
  • Supporting people to make choices and changes to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

All prospective Peer Mentors must take part in an accredited training course (Open Awards) and must also undertake an Enhanced DBS check.

The role of Health Peer Mentor is your chance to make a real difference to the lives of local people, to achieve a qualification and to gain experience that may be relevant to a lot of career choices.
