We will start off with the reign of Elizabeth I and cover the impact of the Reformation, then look at the changes that occurred in the late 1700s, before examining Victorian Netherton and the pre-war 1930s.
Session One - Netherton Under Queen Bess
What do we know about life in rural Lancashire and the people who lived in Netherton in the 1500s? How would life have changed after the Reformation?
Session Two - The Coming of the Canal
The late 1700s was a time of great change in Netherton as the Canal brought a new way to travel and the building of St Benet’s Church hailed a return to freedom for Catholics.
Session Three - Victorian Netherton
In the 1800s, for the first time, it is possible to find real information about the individuals who lived in Netherton and the kind of lives they lived.
Session Four - The Future Beckons
As the Netherton people left behind them one war, another beckoned. The 1920s and 1930s saw a lot of changes politically and industrially. Then, 1939 spelt the beginning of the end for rural Netherton.
